Lisa Townsend, Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, is calling on Sadiq Khan to stop the proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion.
Lisa has joined other Commissioners, Council Leaders, MPs and London Assembly Members in signing a joint letter to the Chairman of the Conservative Party, the Rt Hon Greg Hands MP, outlining concerns and asking for his - and the Government’s - support in opposing the expansion and urging the Mayor of London to reconsider.
Signatories of the letter believe that the ULEZ expansion will be an ineffective and unhelpful measure. Despite a negligible impact on air quality, as evidenced by the Mayor’s own independent impact assessment, ULEZ expansion will have a negative impact on vehicle-dependent individuals and damage small businesses at a time when many are concerned about the rising cost of living.
Lisa said “I am deeply concerned about Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan’s proposed ULEZ expansion and the impact this will have on individuals. Many Surrey residents would be affected by the current proposals on a daily basis, and at a time when the cost of living is of concern to many, putting the burden on residents for a negligible benefit is not the answer to improving London’s air quality.”
