Lisa Townsend, Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, recently hosted a community meeting in Farnham, joined by Sergeant Michael Knight from the local policing team.
The event took place at the Ivy Lane Club and provided an opportunity for attendees to raise questions and concerns about policing and crime in the local area. It was attended by residents and business owners.
Amongst concerns raised included the incident that took place on 25th September 2022 when 14 businesses and homes were damaged in the early hours of the morning. Outlining how his team and the wider police force investigate such matters, Sgt Knight provided an update on this incident and the avenues being explored to identify the offenders.
There were also questions around wider anti-social behaviour (ASB) challenges in the area, and residents were given an update on the work Lisa and her team at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner have been doing to tackle ASB at all levels, and provide better resources and engagement for children and young people.
Following the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Ellie Vesey-Thompson hosted a similar meeting for residents in Haslemere, where she was also joined by Sgt Knight.
The Haslemere community raised concerns around speeding and road safety and requested additional street furniture and signage on roads of particular concern. Ellie explained that unfortunately these are a matter for the Highways team at Surrey County Council but said that she would write to them to ask whether they currently plan to implement any additional measures. Residents were also encouraged to set up Community Speedwatch groups where possible, and Sgt Knight outlined how the police deliver speed enforcement activity.
Lisa said “I am really grateful to the communities in Farnham and Haslemere for taking the time to attend our community meetings and share their questions and concerns. Hearing directly from residents really helps me understand the priorities of our communities.
“Following a recent roundtable meeting I attended at 10 Downing Street around tackling ASB, I welcome the Government’s increased focus on this behaviour that has a daily and sincere impact on the lives of residents. I look forward to further legislation to help us tackle this behaviour and make Surrey an even better place to live.
“I always welcome hearing from residents directly and encourage those with questions or concerns to get in touch.”
