Lisa Townsend, Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner, recently attended Brookwood Cemetery for a centennial event with the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
The event, part of a global network of similar events, marked the agency’s 100 year anniversary, and was held to honour the legacy and sacrifice of those buried or memorialised at ABMC sites around the world.
The event featured music played by the Pipes and Drums Band from local Gordon’s School. A screening of ABMC’s centennial documentary was then played, before artwork was presented to the audience.
Following the event Lisa said, “It was an honour to join ABMC at Brookwood Cemetery to mark their 100 year anniversary.
“The event was poignant and emotive, and the music from the Pipes and Drums from Gordon’s School was brilliant.
“The lighting of candles and their placement on each of the memorial crosses in the American cemetery was such a powerful and fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.”
